APS biting midge management

Biting midge management is all about reducing your contact with midges. There are a number of easy things you can do yourself and products which can help, including repellents, anti-midge clothing and commonsense.

There are also a number of traps commercially available.  These mainly work by attracting midges them with a combination of cues which a midge would be searching for to take a bloodmeal.

APS can help maximise the potential of such traps, for example:

  • how many traps do you need?

  • how should you position your traps to maximise their effectiveness?

  • is it possible to create a barrier around your house/hotel/campsite using traps?

If you are considering investing in a midge trapping device for your home or business or if you already have one or more and want to maximise their impact on this year's midge population, APS can provide professional advice, based on many years of hands-on research.

Our services range from advising on trap positioning from a description of your garden from a photograph or personal visit, to mapping midge breeding grounds (i.e. where adult midges emerge from) within your garden, to complete midge-management programmes for larger organisations, including campsites and hotels: see the link on this page for further information.
